Relaxation not in sight. New record level despite tougher measures.
The coronavirus continues to have Austria firmly under control. Despite the lockdown, the 6,000 mark of new infections was exceeded for the first time. A total of 6,211 people tested positive within the past 24 hours, an alarming number. Most new infections occurred in Upper Austria (1,510), Tyrol (1,143) and the federal capital Vienna (845).
Infectiologist: “Situation is getting more serious
Particularly worrying are the increasing numbers of hospitalizations and persons requiring intensive medical care. In addition to 2,584 hospitalized people, the Ministry of the Interior has already reported 384 intensive care patients.
According to Richard Greil, infectiologist at the University Hospital of Salzburg, the situation will become even more acute in the coming days: “The number of new infections and hospitalizations will continue to rise in the next two to three weeks, as the last days before the lockdown are not yet noticeable. According to the expert, the curve will only flatten out after that, “but before then, the rising numbers will cause us great difficulties”.
Blame for the situation lies with the too late reaction of those responsible, since according to Greil “every day counts and measures were taken too late, which ultimately led to a tracing loss”. The goal must now be to massively reduce contacts in order to achieve similar figures as after the first lockdown and thus ease the situation for the hospitals.
